• Sports development has become a flexible concept that has brought a variety of benefits to different areas. There have been new facilities and improved training for people to get involved with.
• Many schemes have to tie there aims and objectives into local regional and national strategies.
• For example, UK Sport, Sport England and the Sports Council for Wales will all have different sports development schemes and continuum’s
For example sports council of Wales has a scheme which tries to encourage children to participate in sport, it is called the 5x60 scheme.
5x60 is about getting active for at least 60 minutes, 5 x a week. This could be A 10 minute walk to school, a 20 minute kick about.
5x60 is set to change the face of provision of sport in schools and transform playing fields and sports halls into hubs of bustling activity from daybreak to nightfall.
It encourages children to try new sports and become more active. The activities are mainly targeted at individuals that currently do not participate or who are in danger of losing interest.
It is all about having fun and enjoying themselves, but getting something out of it at the same time.
On a sport’s continuum there are generally 4 stages:
Foundation - This is where there is a lot of emphasis is on fun, so the youngsters will enjoy it a lot and will want to carry it on with their sport.
This is where the basic skills are mainly learned such as throwing or catching
Participation - This scheme tends to focus on community participation by getting people to participate regularly. This focuses on people who do not take part in regular exercise or play sport.
Performance – This is where you have regular practise and competition. This is where you could be representing your county.
Excellence – Is where you are at the elite stage. You at national or international level.
It is believed that encouraging more people to participate in sport, will widen the base of the pyramid at the foundation stage and this will result in more people getting to the excellence stage. This would mean that this country would have a better chance of success on the world stage, as we would have more elite athletes.
The WRU has set up an “Academy system” which is set up set upfor players to transfer from performance stage to excellent stage.
This is between the…
Ospreys
Blues
Dragons
Scarlet's
This is to get the best rugby players from each region to join one of the teams. By doing this will enable each of the teams to mature these players which they have, to hopefully help the players to progress with the best coaching and training in order to potentially become Professional players.
By having a system with all 4 teams’ means they are able to all play each other.
This diagram shows how table tennis players will progress in their sport. They start off at club level; this is where they are playing it for fun and Learning basic skills.
The athlete improves and is successful in local honours they will then play for regional teams.
They then play at provincial level. This is being developed in terms of the longer term commitment of players to the sport. They become an elite athlete and get into The National Team and this is the peak of any table tennis player’s career.
This is a sports England development model which represents their version of the continuum. It shows how a certain sport is always introduced to communities, and then people enjoy the sport and carry it on to club level. They can then become world class.
This is a world class programme model used by UK Sports. This again shows how a talent is identified, skills and abilities develop then they get to the podium.
Sports England- Show the way in which they get people involved in sports. They go to communities and get people involved in sports that way. It’s all about getting people to have fun in their sport not about the wining.
Where as UK sports is all about finding talent and training them up. They find someone who is talented, develop their skills and abilities until they reach the podium and win.

Understanding How Quality is Measured in Sports Developmen
Quality should be able to meet customers needs but within a budget and in the most
sustainable way. Most schemes try to measure quality in the hope that it can be continuously improved on.
There are a number of organisations and awards that judge the effectiveness and success of sports development.
These include:
Quest
Charter Mark
Clubmark
Investors in People
Clubmark was introduced in 2002 by sports England. It is the only national cross sports quality scheme for clubs with junior sections. It is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that clubs operate to a set of consistent, accepted and adopted standards.
Sport England recognises and values the commitment made by sports clubs to develop high quality, welcoming environments for young participants.
The Clubmark is designed to show to partners, parents and young people that Clubmark clubs treat young people well.
Clubmark also recognises clubs that identify and support the development of the most talented youngsters
To ensure high standards, all organisations involved in awarding Clubmark are required to have a license since March 2006.
Clubmark is Sport England’s quality accreditation for clubs within the junior section, across all sports.
Something which may shock you is Sport England state that 60% of young people belong to a sports club outside of school. Are you surprised?
Sport England view the influence of sports clubs as being crucial for the development of talent within a safe setting

Between them, Liverpool Basketball and City Hoops have more than 175 members, and in 2010 announced the finalisation of a merger which saw the two clubs join forces, operating under the joint name of Merseyside Basketball Development Programme.
As part of the new combined venture, the Club successfully completed renewal of Clubmark accreditation in July 2010 and has big plans for the future - hoping to attract sponsors, develop facilities and the formation of a female team.
As a single, national standard, Clubmark gives sports clubs of all types structure and direction. Clubs awarded Clubmark have seen many tangible benefits, such as:Addressing issues like equity and child protection gives parents confidence when choosing a club for their children.
As part of Clubmark, clubs are entitled to receive help to develop the skills of coaches. This, in turn leads to better quality provision and improved player performance. Parents can be confident that appropriately qualified coaches are deployed.
The overall cost of putting the system in place may to be high As it ranges from paperwork to computer software.
