Coaching Power Point
Notes to go with PowerPoint
Observation analysis should be used to identify an athletes needs. For example know where an athlete is going wrong and the coach is able to help them.
A coach should asses the performance and effective application of a skill which is performed.
The coach should pick out weaknesses from a performer and improve them.
Helps athletes improve their performers as the coach can tell them what they have to work on to do better in their sport. For example in netball if a player is creating a lot of foot faults , then the coach knows they have to work on balance and they way in which the player land, to make sure the player gives away minimum possession to the opposition.
Coaches could be biased, as they may not have good analysing skills so it could allow them to make mistakes
Bev Ryan shows good observational skills. For example in a game she will analysis what the teams weakness is and improve it in training. This could be such as space marking in netball. She will also pick up on individual errors and fix them. For example she may change the players position to get them to remember what they are doing wrong.
Observation analysis is great to allow a coach to find strengths and weaknesses in their athlete or team. It enables the coach to have something to work on.
Fitness assessments play a valuable role in the development of athletes fitness level.
• Fitness tests can predict potential performance and provide feedback on the effectiveness of a training program.
• You can reassess an athletes fitness.
• You are able to compare results with others.
• You can develop and establish an effective fitness program.
• You identify potential areas of health or injury risk.
• You can establish goals and motivation.
Athletes could find fitness testing tedious.
If the athlete does not like what they are doing, they may not try as hard in what they are doing because they do not find it very exciting
Good coach
Alex Ferguson uses fitness testing to make sure players are physically fit to play games and also if there fitness has improved through the season or not.
Fitness assessment is very important in sport as, it helps an athlete improve there sporting performance. its allows coaches to identify strengths and weaknesses of there athletes or team.
Goal setting should provide both direction and motivation for athletes. Goals should be short term and long term
Long term – This is set for a season or longer. For example getting into
the first team by the end of the season.
Short term - Can be from one day
to one month.
For example achieving something the next training session.
It is good as it increase motivation and confidence as it Gives an athlete something to aim for, during a long period or a short period of time.
It also allows the athletes something to focus on something to do well at.
There is a lot of thought and planning which goes into it, coaches could find this difficult
One of the main problems is that not all coaches are aware of the principles of goal-setting and how to apply them, so they could be giving their athletes the wrong information.
The principles being specific to your sport, measurable, agreed with your coach, realistic, time passed, exciting so you don’t become tedious and
Bad Coach
Gordon Strachan has bad goal setting, within his team because he doesn't give his team anything to aim for. This is why his team aren't very successful at the moment.
Goal setting allows a coach and athlete to work to work towards achieving goals and to increase motivation and self confidence.
